I don't know if this translates to the 351C but my 302 windsor had the exact same sympton. I switched to a Wix Oil filter and picked up the extra 8 psi of oil pressure at idle that I wanted without having to change the idle speed. You can get Wix filters at Napa otherwise they seem hards to find. HTH.

May 14, 2009 · On my 05 Pathy, it indicates low oil pressure when the engine is warm, and the engine is running at idle speed. The needle reads below L on the gauge and the warning light turns on. When the engine (and oil) are cold, the needle reads midway between L and H. This has not changed. But as the car warms up, the idle oil pressure drops.

May 19, 2009 · Cleaned out the pickup screen and oil filter housing, reassembled with new oil (10w-30) and genuine filter. Started up, 70psi at idle. After the source of the contamination is found and fixed the oil should be drained and refilled with the approved grade of oil. It is also recommended to change the oil filter. Sometimes the low oil pressure is due to something so small as a clogged oil filter. Caterpillar oil filters are built specifically for Caterpillar engines.

Apr 17, 2012 · My O-290D with a new oil pump and around 1560 hrs TT has about 80 psi @2300, and 50 psi at idle. The other thing the light colored material could be is bearing material. I would consider a teardown due to running at that low oil pressure at idle, or at least oil change/oil analysis every 25 hrs? Jan 14, 2012 · when you see this flashing light and engine behavior is occurring, does it ever sound like the engine is running hard (lots of loud top-end clatter as if you are running low on oil)? if not, it could just be a faulty oil pressure sending unit (sensor). when it begins to act up, it is probably throwing the system into limp mode. your engine will not rev over 3k rpm; and it will be very slow...

The thing to do is to NOT run the engine until you find and correct the low oil pressure problem. The fact that your oil pressure is now a little on the low side now is that you have probably damaged your engine by running it with low oil pressure. Lucky you didn't end up with a seized engine. You might be right. If the oil pressure test shows you have around 20-40 psi at idle, and over 40 psi under load, then the sending unit is bad, and you should replace it. If it shows you have no oil pressure, I'd start with the oil pump, remove the oil pan and check for a clogged screen, and might as well replace the pump while you are at it.
